Aberdeen First Responders has strengthened its emergency response capabilities with new defibrillator equipment. The funding from the Scottish Building Society Foundation has enabled the volunteer led group to refresh critical lifesaving kit including replacement defibrillator units, pads, batteries, and maintenance gear,  ensuring these are ready for action at a moment’s notice.

Working alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service, Aberdeen First Responders supports emergency calls across the city and surrounding areas. With every minute counting during a cardiac arrest, having reliable equipment increases the chance of survival dramatically. Defibrillators can boost survival rates by up to 70% when used promptly.

Aberdeen First Responder Ewan Pow led the initiative to upgrade the equipment. Earlier this year, Ewan was named First Aid Hero of the Year at the Scottish First Aid Awards after saving a patient on his first solo call as a volunteer. His quick thinking and use of a defibrillator helped stabilise the patient before paramedics arrived. Reflecting on the impact of the funding, Ewan said: "I've seen first-hand how early defibrillation can be the difference between life and death. With the support from the Scottish Building Society Foundation, we’re able to give our volunteers the tools they need to respond confidently and effectively.”

Paul Denton, Chief Executive of Scottish Building Society, added: “Aberdeen First Responders is a shining example of community spirit and lifesaving service. We’re proud to support their work and help empower volunteers making real change across Scotland.”
