We're helping primary school pupils across Scotland 'Tackle Maths'.

11 Jan 2024 Written by: Scottish Building Society

We've hit our landmark target of helping over 175 pupils to 'Tackle Maths'.

As part of our 175th Anniversary celebrations, we teamed up with Edinburgh Rugby to set up Tackle Maths - a community programme that takes maths out of the classroom and on to the rugby pitch.

We set a target of helping at least 175 school children apply their maths skills to practical, real world scenarios. The programme moves maths away from being a paper-based exercise into more active learning environment.

The session incorporates a tour of Hive Stadium, Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, the Scotland Team dressing room and the Scottish Rugby shop. Questions are based on these locations.

We recently celebrated reaching our impressive target by visiting Kirknewton primary school with Cammy Scott and Connor Boyle from Edinburgh Rugby and speaking with the pupils that took part in the programme.

Helping children build their financial skills for the future is something we're committed to, and Tackle Maths is a fantastic initiative to support.

Paul Denton, Chief Executive, Scottish Building Society said: “When we started this programme our aim was also to help at least 175 children to see maths can actually be fun. We're delighted to have achieved this ahead of schedule and look forward to getting even more kids involved.

“Having a practical learning environment coupled with rugby professionals showing pupils how they use maths and why it is important gives them a different perspective of learning and inspires them.

“As the main club partner of Edinburgh Rugby, we want to give back to communities and Tackle Maths has proven to be one of the most impactful programmes  we have ever run. I hope it will continue to inspire kids to think differently about learning, both in and out of the classroom".

Douglas Struth, Managing Director, Edinburgh Rugby said: “Edinburgh Rugby is at its heart a community rugby club – working in partnership with Scottish Building Society to deliver this programme to over 175 school kids is a fantastic achievement for both organisations.

“Inspiring and promoting learning are values both organisations share so it's very encouraging to see Tackle Maths take off so successfully in its first full year.”

Email community@edinburghrugby.org if your school is interested in taking part in the Tackle Maths initiate.

Why is this important?

We have 2 login systems running for a little while, the existing online system currently used by our online Members and our new system that everyone will soon have access to.

Whilst we upgrade our online system, we wanted to make sure our regular customers have their usual access.

The date the new system came online was the 30th of April.
