The Mutual Difference
As a mutual organisation, Scottish Building Society is owned by and run for the benefit of its members. Every individual who opens a savings account or takes out a mortgage with the Society becomes a member.
Because we have no external shareholders, we are totally accountable to our members and with no dividends to pay we can share the results of our success with our members.
Unlike many other financial institutions, our primary aim is not to maximise profit. Any surplus profits we make are reinvested in the Society to benefit our members and ensure we have sufficient funds to invest in the future and remain financially strong.
We believe we have an important role to play both in the provision of a safe haven for our members’ savings and in offering a range of mortgage products to meet their needs.
We get to know our members through our Member Forums and regularly invite feedback through our Member Panel and Customer Feedback surveys.
We are also committed to supporting the communities in which we operate. Through our Community Charity of the Year initiative, we allow members to select the local charities we support.
In addition to the benefits of mutuality, we reward our members for staying with us and have created our Loyalty Promises which outline the commitments we make to all our members:
