So what is a Mutual?
Mutuals are organisations that are owned by and run for the benefit of the members. The Scottish Building Society is a mutual and as such, operates a risk averse and traditional business style for the benefit of our members. We have been doing this successfully since 1848.
Our members benefit from a range of competitive financial products and know that their funds are safe, being looked after by an organisation that built its reputation on trust and confidence.
In the recent financial turmoil, many financial organisations have lost the trust and respect of their customers. However, the Scottish Building Society mutual model continues to thrive, building on long term relationships with members by offering a refreshingly down to earth and transparent culture to do business. We continue to grow the business year on year and this includes the membership. People like the financial solutions we offer - not to mention the style of working, the integrity and the fact that our members own the business.
The Society focuses on service and quality, rather than taking risks! This along with our prudent management has meant we have not been exposed to the global credit crisis. However, we are still required to contribute to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme to assist in bailing out the reckless banks.
