When you open a new account with us, we normally have to ask you for proof of your name and address. This is nothing to worry about - but is designed to make it harder for criminals to use stolen identities. Every bank, building society and financial institution has to do this, because we all have to comply with the government's money laundering regulations.
We will, wherever possible, use an electronic verification system which can confirm your identity. However, we may need to ask you to provide further proof - particularly if you are not on the electoral roll or have moved house recently. It may therefore be helpful if you can produce a current signed passport or a current UK photocard driving licence, or some other official document showing your name and address, at the time you apply.
The lists below show the types of document which we would need to see, if we are unable to confirm your identity electronically. We will normally require one item from list A and one from list B - but if you are opening your account by post, we may need three items (one from list A, one from list B and a third from either list).
List A - Proof of who you are:
List B - Proof of where you live:
Under 18's
If you can provide a current passport or UK photocard driving licence, we will not normally need any further documentation. Please note that where any other item appears on both lists, you can only use it once.
We can only accept original documents, or photocopies certified by a solicitor or other professional person.
If you cannot provide documents from these lists, please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you.
We will keep a record of the ID you have provided, which may involve retaining a copy of your documents. These records are required to satisfy statutory obligations and will not be used for any other purposes.
