Mark was appointed as Chief Executive on 1 May 2013, having joined the Society in April 2012 in the role of Chief Operating Officer and been appointed to the Board in October 2012. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and a Chartered Banker. During his career of 30-plus years, Mark has worked in a variety of roles in retail banking, including 16 years at Scottish Widows Bank, where his responsibilities included credit risk management and compliance, as well as a wide range of operational activities. Mark was appointed to the Board of Scottish Widows Bank in January 2006 as Credit Director – a position he held until joining the Society. Mark currently chairs the Society’s Conduct Risk Committee.
Aileen joined the Society in 2016 as Finance Director. A member of ICAS, Aileen brings broad experience at board and senior management level to the role. Most recently she was Interim Finance Director at Scottish Friendly and prior to that was Group Chief Financial Officer with Braveheart Investment Group plc. Aileen has held Board level positions in a variety of sectors and worked in corporate finance and professional services including five years with Ernst & Young.
Head of Finance
A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA), Graeme joined the Society in the role of Head of Finance in January 2013. Prior to joining the Society, Graeme worked across a broad range of finance roles including 6 years with Bank of Scotland / Lloyds Banking Group, 7 years with Scottish & Newcastle and 4 years in the Petroleum Engineering industry. Graeme has responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of the Society finances, including the Treasury function, and is a member of the Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO).
Head of HR
Emily has been with the Society since 2012 and is responsible for employee performance/engagement/relations, reward and recognition, staff resourcing, training and development, employee terms and conditions, change facilitation, and legal advice in respect of employment laws. Emily has worked in HR since 1999 in the private, public and not for profit sector and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel.
Head of Sales
Before joining Scottish Building Society in 2008, John was with Bank of Scotland for over 35 years, working in the branch network around Edinburgh for 10 years before moving to their Centralised Mortgage Department. Following the merger with Halifax to create HBOS, he was appointed Head of Bank of Scotland Mortgages. Within the Society his current responsibilities include Sales, Business Development and the Agency network. John is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland.
Head of Marketing & Communications
Kerra joined the Society in 2014 and has responsibility for all marketing activity, including advertising, brand communications, digital, retail, and customer insight. She also leads the Society’s member engagement and community involvement programmes. Prior to joining the Society, Kerra held a variety of marketing and commercial roles with Tesco Bank and John Menzies plc. A member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Kerra began her career in the Drinks industry as a graduate trainee with Scottish & Newcastle.
Head of Risk
A Fellow of the Institute of Bankers, Kenny started with the Society in August 2012 and was appointed to the role of Head of Risk in April 2015. During his 38 year career he has worked in a variety of roles within Clydesdale Bank and Scottish Widows Bank, where he latterly held the position of Senior Manager, Legal and Compliance.
Head of Lending
Prior to joining Scottish Building Society in 2013, Andrew spent 8 years at Scottish Widows Bank, predominantly as a Credit Manager involved in mortgage new lending, arrears management, portfolio management and fraud prevention. Latterly he moved to the Risk and Compliance Team as Manager, Legal and Regulatory Change focussing on the Mortgage Market Review. Andrew began his career in financial services with Northern Rock in 1988, remaining with them for 15 years. Andrew worked in branches in the Newcastle area before moving to Edinburgh in 1992, where he was later involved in establishing a new Mortgage Service Centre.
Head of IT
Alison is responsible for the strategic delivery and support of IT systems to fulfil the business requirements set out in the corporate plan to meet the business needs. Alison enjoys the challenges and opportunities within the IT role and is proud of her team who support the array of systems deployed in the business. Alison's previous employers include Croda Polymers International, Edmund Nuttall Civil Engineering and Surgikos - Johnson & Johnson. Alison has been with the Society since 1991.
Aileen was appointed Secretary for the Society in 2016. A Scottish qualified solicitor, Aileen worked in private practice for several years as a litigation specialist. She then moved in-house to the Royal Bank of Scotland plc where she worked for 20 years in a wide variety of legal roles, latterly specialising in legal risk management and policy.
Chief Operating Officer
Alan joined the Society in April 2014 as Head of Projects. During May 2015 he was appointed to the new role of Chief Operating Officer with his span of control covering all Operational tasks, including Head Office Operations, Branch Operations, Lending and IT and management of all change initiatives. Alan has many years banking experience having worked at TSB, and later Lloyds TSB Scotland, in a number of Branch Network and Retail roles. As Area Mortgage Development Manager, Alan was responsible for managing the Mortgage Advisor team as well as developing external relationships with Mortgage Intermediaries, Solicitors and Valuers. He moved to Scottish Widows in 2005 with whom he worked in a variety of project and governance roles. Alan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, a member of the Association of MBAs and a member of the Association for Project Management.
