About Us

Scotland's first ever Building Society started life in March 1848 as the Edinburgh Property Investment Company, changing its name to Scottish Building Society in 1929. Since those early days, there has been a substantial increase in the number of customers and the range of products offered, matching Scotland's developing social and economic needs, whilst remaining true to the original tradition of thrift and careful money-management.

Our status as a mutual provides our members with confidence, secure in the knowledge that as owners of the business, the Scottish is being run in their best interests. Your Society has over 30,000 members and continues to grow as more people are becoming aware of the mutual sector and what it represents.

As well as looking after members' funds and offering borrowers an excellent range of mortgage products through our six branches and the website, we also have 80 Agency offices located around Scotland from as far north as Orkney to Galashiels in the Borders.

We have a great relationship with our members and are not content to just do 'business'. We like to become part of the local community. With our Affinity Accounts, we are able to donate to Bethesda Hospice in Stornoway. The Variety Club of Scotland Affinity Account enables us to donate to under privileged children in Scotland and the Diabetes Scotland Affinity Account generates funds for this worthwhile charity.

Gerry Kay and Alesha Dixon

CEO of the Society, Gerry Kay, is pictured here presenting a cheque for £1,200.00 from the Society to Alesha Dixon for the Variety Club of Scotland. Alesha is one of the many celebrities who support the great work Variety Club carries out on behalf of disadvantaged children.

£1,200.00 donation was based on the number of postal votes received for the AGM held in Aberdeen earlier in the year.

Pictured here with Gerry and Alesha is Elliot McKenzie, Chairman of the Variety Club of Scotland.

What a job for the CEO...but someone had to do it!!

Jillian Gordon & Shona Cardle

Jillian Gordon ran the London Marathon to raise money for Yorkhill Hospital's Schiehallion Unit. She raised over £800, which the Society happily added to, taking the total past the £1,000 mark. Pictured here with Jillian is Shona Cardle, Chief Executive of Yorkhill Children Foundation.

Relay for Life

The Society also celebrated Peterkins' Huntly office staff achievement in the recent Relay for Life Charity event, by adding another £500 to the funds, bringing the total raised for Cancer Research UK, to over £3,000.
